Factors to consider in a Tandem Kayak

Type of kayak

Tandem kayaks come in different configurations. First, let us discuss the types of Tandem kayaks about their sitting forms. We have the sit-on and the sit-in tandem kayaks.

• Sit-on tandem kayaks are designed such that the two kayakers sit on the kayak as they paddle. These types of tandem kayaks have a flatter and bigger hull for increased balancing.

As opposed to Hardshell Tandem kayaks, Inflatable tandem kayaks are foldable when deflated. They are easier to store and transport and are just as strong as the hardshell types.

• Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)- Most inflatable tandem kayaks are made from PVC. These types of kayaks are lightweight and easy to store. They are very affordable as well.

• Fiber and carbon glass- These make up the most expensive types of tandem kayaks. They are fast, lightweight, and have high maneuvering abilities.

• Wood- wood is the most uncommonly used material for making tandem kayaks. However wood made tandem kayaks are lightweight and durable like other kayaks. They are just not widely used.

Tandem kayaks are made to bear more weight than solo types. This is because it bears the weight of two kayakers. When choosing a tandem kayak, consider your weight and that of your co-paddler. Adding up both weight plus that of any gears you might be bringing, tells you the weight capacity of the tandem kayak you should go for. As a general rule, wider and longer kayaks are heavier. 

Dimensions of the kayak

Tandem kayaks come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Different tandem kayak sizes have different characteristics. Let us outline some of the dimensions and their corresponding qualities

The longer a tandem kayak, the faster it goes and the less effort it requires to move. They are generally more stable. On the other hand, the shorter the tandem kayak, the easier it is to maneuver. However, short tandem kayaks are less stable.

The wider the kayak, the more stable it is. That's why most fishing tandem kayaks are made wide. The large surface area provides enough balance for the kayak. Narrow tandem kayaks are unstable and do not provide enough room space for comfort.

Transportation and storage of tandem kayaks

Consider your available storage space before buying a tandem kayak. Long and wide kayaks require more space than short and narrow ones. Also, hardshell kayaks are more difficult to store than inflatable types. The same trend goes for transportation.
